Christian education (Sunday school) is available for all
ages from September to early June. The program uses a curriculum entitled a
Presbyterian Curriculum “We Believe”.
The following classes are offered on Sunday at 9:30 AM:
- Preschool /
Kindergarten & Grade 1 / Grades 2 & 3 / Grades 4 to 6 / Grades
7 to 8 / Grades 9 to 12
Students
learn to express themselves as young Christians through Bible study,
mission work, and community service. Included in this year's mission work
was participation in "Operation Christmas Child," in which the
students filled and sent shoe boxes with personal care items, clothing, and
toys to people in areas affected by war. Through offerings and fundraisers
last year, the youth of the church donated the Bibles for the new
sanctuary. This year, offerings collected by the youth will be sent to the
Presbyterian Disaster Assistance Fund, which helps communities adversely
affected by crisis and catastrophic events. On the Second Sunday of the
month, we will have a special Sunday School time for all of these children
and youth where we will come together as one group for a time of prayer,
singing, a lesson and activities.
This
group examines a wide range of contemporary religious issues and topics.
Through discussion of current books on a variety of spiritual topics, the
Bible, and other curriculum materials, we aim to enrich our spiritual lives
and increase our discipleship. Usually four to six separate studies of
various length are scheduled each year. All
are open to any adults who are interested.
The Kerygma
course is titled “Discovering the Bible: A New Generation”. It is a comprehensive introduction to the
Bible as a whole. In the fall of
2011, we will begin studying the New Testament. It meets during the Sunday School Hour
and the same class is also taught on Monday evenings for people who prefer
an evening setting. Dinner is
provided for the Monday evening class.
Other opportunities for Christian education:
- Preschool and
Kindergarten
Three
year olds through 2nd graders participate in A Time for Young Christians, a children's
sermonette, during the worship service. The
children are then excused to attend Children's Church. Children's Church
uses Bible stories and lessons to teach the basics of what it means to be a
Christian.
Children
ages 3 years through completed 6th grade are welcome to share in a week of
songs, Bible lessons, drama, arts and crafts, games, and snacks. All
children who attend Gwynedd Square Presbyterian Church and all children in
the surrounding community are invited to attend. Call the church
office for dates and times.
An
overnight Bible camp located in the Poconos, Kirkwood is run by the
Philadelphia Presbytery. Campers attend different week-long sessions for
specific age groups, grades 2 through 12, during June, July, and August.
The programs provide experiences in sports, fellowship, games, Bible study,
leadership, volunteer work, camping, and outdoor adventure. Costs vary
depending on the length and focus of program selected. Scholarships are
available; inquire at the church office for more information.
Students
in grades 7 through 12 are welcome to attend the meetings of the SLUGs (Students Living Under God), which combine
Christian education, fellowship, and mission activities. Students in grades
4 through 6 may join a similar group, FISH
(Fellowship In Serving Him). Students in
Kindergarten through 3rd grade may join a similar group, AIM (Angels in the Making).
