Gwynedd Square Presbyterian Church engages in a variety of activities that are related to helping others. Mission activities have been strongly supported by the church since it was founded.
From providing a meal to a local family in need, to helping with disaster relief efforts, we believe in
mission and outreach to meet the needs of people in our church, our community, and our world.
The church plans to spend approximately $80,000 or 22% of its budget on mission projects.
In addition, contributions and mission activities are undertaken by numerous groups in the church,
including C'Farers, the youth group, the
Sunday school classes, the Deacons, the
women's association and the women's bible study groups.
The main group responsible for allocating money for mission projects is the Mission
Interpretation and Stewardship Committee. The committee sponsors or co-sponsors mission dinners,
and offers the congregation a copy of our mission yearbook for prayer and study. The committee's
stewardship activities center around the donations of members and friends of the church, of both
a monetary and non-monetary nature. Stewardship activities include organizing and annual
stewardship campaign and sponsoring several Sunday special offerings.
Of the budgeted amount for benevolence in 2005, $18,000 will be designated locally by the Mission
Interpretation and Stewardship Committee and the remained will be distributed by the Philadelphia Presbytery,
the Synod of the Trinity, and the Presbyterian General Assembly. For the first quarter of 2005, a total of
$4,000 in locally designated benevolence gifts were disbursed to the following:
- The Haningers ($1000) - Dr. Michael Haninger is an OB/GYN physician, and his wife Nancy is a nurse-mid-wife involved in direct patient care, health promotion, and disease prevention. They are Presbyterian missionaries at the Good Shepherd Hospital that is located in the village of Tshikaji, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Western Africa. They visited us in 2003 and expressed their gratitude for our continued financial support.
- Central Montgomery Medical Center Chaplaincy Fund ($500) - We are blessed at being able to help local hospital chaplains who serve patients, their families, and even those who treat patients. They share pain and suffering and provide comfort and spiritual support in the name of Christ as a witness to His saving grace.
- Heifer Project International ($500) - Conceived over 60 years ago, this worldwide program to end hunger and poverty was born of Christian faith by Dan West of the Church of the Brethren. While the program is international in scope, we also work directly with projects located in our region.
- Philabundance ($500) - Philabundance and the Greater Philadelphia Food Bank, the two largest hunger relief organizations in the Delaware Valley, have merged in an active program of driving hunger and malnutrition from our community. The combined network assists 1,100 human service agencies across nine counties helping to serve over 574,000 area residents who live at or below the poverty line.
- Presbyterian Children's Village ($500) - Located in Rosemount, the Village was founded as an orphanage in 1877. Over the years, it has adapted its services to aid children with emotional and behavioral issues, and children who have suffered from abuse or neglect. The Village currently serves more than a thousand children and youth annually through residential and community-based programs.
- Presbyterian Disaster Assistance ($500) - During the past year the PDA has responded internationally to major disasters and civil conflicts in almost 40 countries and nationally to disasters in 26 states affecting over 35 presbyteries. Over 1,000 Presbyterian volunteers have participated in the monumental rebuilding efforts. "These statistics are especially meaningful after the violent hurricane year and continuing to this day after the disastrous Tsunami of Southeast Asia.
- Theological Education Fund ($500) - This fund supports ten seminaries and two covenant partner seminaries committed to the Reformed tradition of the Presbyterian Church. These schools are dedicated to enriching and sustaining academic communities in which men and woman can be informed and inspired for Christian ministry. Support from individual congregations is vital to the continuing role of these seminaries in preparing church leaders for today and tomorrow.
Needlework Guild
The Needlework Guild is a national volunteer charity that has been operating
since 1885. The Guild's purpose is to improve the quality of life for needy
people in the United States and its possessions. Volunteers collect new clothing,
household linens, and essential toiletries and give them to their neighbors in
need through recognized community organizations. In 1998, Gwynedd Square's branch
of the Needlework Guild contributed over 100 items and over $200.
All of these organizations offer ample opportunities for the members of
Gwynedd Square to give of their time, treasure, and talents.
